Needle Lace How-to
Instructor: Laura Battista / Kelly Ridley This class will run through the basic stitches used in needle lace. Bobbin Lace for the Fabulous Kit cost: $5 Instructor: Lucia de Moranza / Heather Bogart Davies This is a beginner level bobbin lace class where we'll cover the basics of bobbin manipulation, whole stitch, half stitch and plaits. If you have pillow and bobbins, please bring them along. If not, no fear, there will be six kits available. Needle Lace Design Instructor: Laura Battista / Kelly Ridley In this class we will review a brief history of needle lace and the evolution of designs. We review design elements and procedures (Order of Operations). Most importantly, we'll cover some troubleshooting and corrections. Late-Period Stitching Instructor: Amelye Merriman / Amy Lee This class will focus on the stitches used in the polychrome embroidery of fifteenth and sixteenth century garments and accessories, which can also be used for the raised gold work of ecclesiastical embroidery in period, and the secular raised work caskets just outside of period. We will practice our stitches on a small sample. Goldwork is shiny Kit Cost: $10 Instructor: Marina Anastasia Ozeroski / Jane Boyko Learn 4 late period goldwork techniques found in Elizabethan embroidery. If there’s time I will teach 1-2 other techniques. Supplied kit: Linen, Gold threads, Couching thread, Needles Please bring to class your personal embroidery tools as well as: Thread cutting scissors Metal cutting scissors Beeswax Medium and large darning needles 7-8” round hoop or 8x8 stretcher bar frame and tacks F-clamp or clamping embroidery stand Optional: A 2nd hoop same size or smaller plus cotton muslin (for use as a practice cloth) Introduction to Bayeux Stitch Instructor: Kolbjorn Skattkaupandi / Jason Kingston In this class we will review the Bayeux tapestry, including the designs embroidered and materials used. We will review the stitches used on the tapestry, and break down the components of the Bayeux stitch itself. Participants will be provided ground fabric with a drawn design to practice on, as well as embroidery floss to use during the class. If you have your own project drawn out you would prefer to bring please do so. Please bring your own hoop / frame and needles. Braids, braids, braids! Kit Cost $5 Instructor: Aoibheann MacEwan / Tiffany Campbell Kumihimo for beginners. At this class, you will be taught about the history of kumihimo and how to make a basic 8-strand braid that can be used for just about any braiding need you can think of. Often used as lacing for both garb and armour thanks to it's strength and flexibility, kumihimo offers a unique and beautiful braiding option. We will be using modern looms for this class, due to their portable nature, but for those interested, a demonstration on the traditional marudai will also be held, with an opportunity to give it a whirl. Brocade Tablet Weaving Instructor: Yvette de Sancler / Yvette Foster Bring your tablet weaving to the next level by learning to brocade. 16th Century Knitted Sock Construction Kit Cost $10 Instructor: Estienne de Nantes / Cynthia Brown In this class we will make a mini sock intended to show the basics of the shaping used for King Johan III of Sweden’s burial hose (d. 1592). Assumed knowledge includes backwards loop cast on, knit, purl, knitting with DPNs, lifted increase, k2tog, p2tog, ssk, p3tog, binding off, and picking up along an edge. This pattern is written for 5 DPNs; those using 4 or two circulars will need to adjust the instructions. Ten kits available. Supplies include: Size 3.5-3.75mm (US 4-5) DPNs (5); I used 3.75mm bamboo and I’m a tight knitter. Worsted weight wool with good stitch definition, approx. 15-20g in a light colour; my test sock weighs 14g using Perfect by Sandnes, 85% wool / 15% nylon. |
